Detecting Evil-twin Attacks in Smart Homes Using The Received Signal Strength Indicator
نویسندگان
چکیده
Evil-twin is a common attack in WIFI environments, with which an attacker can set up a fake AP to steal sensitive information from the connected devices. The current approaches of detecting Evil-twin AP use some identities or fingerprints (such as SSIDs, MAC address and network traffic patterns) to verify the identify of the AP. However, such information can be easily obtained and faked by the attacker, leading to low detection rates. This paper presents a novel Evil-Twin AP detection method based on the received signal strength indicator (RSSI). Our key insight is that the AP location rarely moves in a smart home environment where the RSSI of the genuine AP is relatively stable. Therefore, the RSSI can be used as the fingerprint of the genuine AP to detect fake APs. Our approach employs two strategies to detect a fake AP in two different scenarios where the genuine AP can be located on a single or multiple locations. Our approach uses the multipath effect of the WIFI signal to detect the identify of the connected AP. Compared to classical detection methods, our approach does not rely professional devices. Experimental results show that the single position detection approach achieves with an accuracy over 90% with little cost in delay time.

Exploiting Wireless Received Signal Strength Indicators to Detect Evil-Twin Attacks in Smart Homes
Evil-Twin is becoming a common attack in smart home environments where an attacker can set up a fake AP to compromise the security of the connected devices. To identify the fake APs, The current approaches of detecting Evil-Twin attacks all rely on information such as SSIDs, theMAC address of the genuine AP, or network traffic patterns. However, such information can be faked by the attacker, of...

Wireless sensor networks attracting a great deal of research interest. Accurate localization of sensor nodes is a strong requirement in a wide area of applications. In recent years, several techniques have been proposed for localization in wireless sensor networks. In this paper we present a localization scheme with using only one mobile anchor station and received signal strength indicator tec...
متن کاملMETDS - A Self-contained, Context-Based Detection System for Evil Twin Access Points
Mobile Evil Twin attacks stem from the missing authentication of open WiFi access points. Attackers can trick users into connecting to their malicious networks and thereby gain the capability to mount further attacks. Although some recognition and prevention techniques have been proposed, they have been impractical and thus have not seen any adoption. To quantify the scale of the threat of evil...
متن کاملGPS Jamming Detection in UAV Navigation Using Visual Odometry and HOD Trajectory Descriptor
Auto-navigating of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV) in the outdoor environment is performed by using the Global positioning system (GPS) receiver. The power of the GPS signal on the earth surface is very low. This can affect the performance of GPS receivers in the environments contaminated with the other source of radio frequency interference (RFI). GPS jamming and spoofing are the most serious a...
متن کاملWho is peeping at your passwords at Starbucks? - To catch an evil twin access point
In this paper, we consider the problem of “evil twin” attacks in wireless local area networks (WLANs). An evil twin is essentially a phishing (rogue) Wi-Fi access point (AP) that looks like a legitimate one (with the same SSID name). It is set up by an adversary, who can eavesdrop on wireless communications of users’ Internet access. Existing evil twin detection solutions are mostly for wireles...
